So I spent all this time converting all these high resolution scans to jpegs so I could post them on this blog and most of the files are still too big to post. So I'm just posting all the jpegs that are small enough to post. this means they aren't retouched and they're extremely dust scans. but they still look kinda cool. they're also completely out of sequence and almost none of my color portraits made it but here is a little taste of some rough new work thanks. these are all film either shot with a pentax 645 or hasselblad.

So I've neglected this blog yet again but for good reason. I've archived and scanned almost all of my important. I cant stress how important and time consuming this was for me enough. it took forever. Here is the beginning of an ongoing project called narcissus. it consists of a large series of self-portraits that is tentatively set to end around 1,000 self-portraits. It will probably never cease to stop growing. I have been taking self-portraits for a while by now and I am fascinated by the problems that constantly taking pictures of ourself presents. I'll get more in depth with this concept later but for now check out the beginning. I have to make the files smaller to post them on this blog so these are just the jpegs that are small enough to post... sorry.

I recently purchased a new camera!!!!! its totally awesome. It is a Pentax 645nii medium format SLR camera and it takes amazing pictures. Prepare yourselves for a whole new look from me. I'm currently taking color pictures with 220 film. It's like christmas in the spring time.

I've decided to do a weekly posting on art that is influencing me. Each week I want to do at least one of these posts concerning one visual, one musical and one literary artist that I'm exploring. This will be the first installment of many. I promise some of them will be silly.

Dieter Appelt
Born in 1935 Dieter Appelt is a German photographer who I just recently discovered. He has quickly become one of my favorite photographers and has already begun to influence my work. He works typically with a large format camera. A lot of his work was shot in his native Germany. He is fascinated by places that are charged with history. His series of photographs "Monte Isola" is a powerful commentary on the psychic effects of World War II. He grew up next to a bog and found the bodies of dead soldiers as a child. He also uses sculpture of his own creation in his photographs. I cant find many of the images that I wanted to show you but here are a few.

Elliott Smith- XO
Why do the good ones always commit suicide? if you're not familiar with Elliott Smith's work you are doing your ears and heart a great disservice. He committed suicide very early in his career(by stabbing himself in the heart no less). His lyrics are sad and his melodies are gorgeous. There has even been an orchestral tribute album. He was great and almost all of his music is too. The album XO in particular has been on heavy rotation in my headphones the past couple of weeks and it is spectacular. Add these albums to your list of albums you've been meaning to listen to XO, Either/OR, From a Basement on the Hill, and Figure 8. Its sad and depressing music but it is undeniably rich, complex and special music also.

And finally I just read Rainer Maria Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet. It's a short read and its brain food. Rilke has amazing advice for young artists and his ability to describe the pain and frustration of trying to create something is gorgeous. He then goes on to explain why suffering is necessary to make great art as well as living with the work. A must read for all creative minds.

I recently did a job for my friend Joe and his company Senergy. They are trying to replace all these streetlight in the city with energy efficient LED lights. They're pretty cool and superior to the street lights we are used to in every way. As a night photographer I'm fascinated by street lights so this job was right up my alley. Check out some samples of the pictures for their website. Apparently they're gonna pitch this to Mayor Bloomberg. They have a pilot site out in Yonkers, New York so Joe and I went out there for a day. The LEDs are really amazing and give off way better light that is directional instead of diffused. Notice how the LEDs do not bleed in to the houses. The point of the shoot was to notice the superiority of the LED. It's pretty obvious I think.

Wierd things happen under the Brooklyn-Queens expressway. They store all types of construction equipment under there as well as do quite a bit of construction on the structure itself. Sometimes when they do that they put up these crazy huge canvas drapes to keep the dust in or whatever. If you sneak in on a sunny day it makes for some really interesting photographs.

My fellow classmate Caitlin Peluffo did a very interesting installation and video in her studio a couple weeks ago. She bought a very frozen and very heavy pig, hung it on meat hooks in her studio and proceeded to wash it ceremonially then splatter paint all over it and then beat the living daylights out of it. this was all recorded of course. The installation was like the scene of a crime with the recording of her performance projected upon the wall behind it. Caitlin told me she was inspired by a story her mother told her about coming home and her father had made a mess and expected her to clean it up. Its most definitely was a gnar gnar experience.

SXSW recap saturday

Saturday was a slow going day. I spent almost my entire day at the Levi's Fader fort. If you havent been hitting this place up during sxsw you should. it's free you just have to rsvp and the line-ups are always good. this year Nas played as well as a bunch of the bands that I mentioned below. there was also free Budweiser and SoCo and delicious Salt Lick Barbie Cue. But the reason we were at the fort was because we found out That Bone Thugz n Harmony was going to close out the night there. The first band we saw was Stones throw artist Dam Funk. he is suck a character. very entertaining. see what i mean below. and yes he busted out the keytar.

other bands that followed were Dum Dum girls who looked very cool but I didnt find them engaging, Real Estate, Salem, Yelawolf, Sleigh Bells and then Bone Thugz. This was my second time to see Sleigh Bells this year and I must say they arent very good. They're actually annoying. The guitarist looks angry and acts like his riffs are so hardcore when they're actually kinda weak and the lead singer although she is easy on the eyes is trying way too hard to be a rock. Boo Sleigh Bells Boo. But the band that wins the award for funniest/worst/unbelievably bad/ I cant believe what I'm seeing/ I cant believe I like their music(on record) goes to Salem. I'm sure anybody who saw them at sxsw would agree. I actually like their new record. It's dark, has alot of depth and texture and their is some interestin g and creative stuff going on. But their live performance at the fort was horrendous and they were boo'd off stage. They started the set with a rap song called trapdoor (these are disaffected heroine addicted white kids from detroit so keep that in mind). The lead singer/rapper or whatever then proceeded to go over and try to play the drum machine. he was totally offbeat and looked as if he had never touched the instrument before. it was comical. they were not into it, you could tell. it was just really really bad and its a shame.

Yelawolf was quite entertaining. He's a fast rapper. lots of bass. kind of like a white Twista. I wouldnt buy his album but I'll see his live show for free any day. He threw a bunch of beer in to the crowd as well as free jeans and shoes. He also brought two girls on stage and asked them if they liked to get drunk. they said yes and he gave them beers too. He could play my graduation party if he wanted.

He's really an intellectual.

SXSW recap friday

Golly gee golly gee. Fatigue is starting to set in. it's harder to wake up. I can feel my legs beginning to ache. But you know what it's SXSW and there is places to go and people to see and live music i think. We biked downtown to meet up with my friend Frannie at the Village Voice party at La Zona Rosa. The xx was headlining that party so of course there was a ridiculously long line. No problem for a balla chillin in da VIP! Frannie works for the voice and is really awesome and nice and hooked us up. if you check out the village voice's music section or twitter music account thing that's frannie. In the VIP we drank free delicious drinks and ate free fajitas from freebirds. Superchunk played but we were too enthralled in free booze and food. We chilled there for time to get full and get our buzz on then it was off to the French Legation again for chillin in the sun. I honestly dont really remember if we saw any bands between the french legation and where we ended the night at Klub Krucial. But we were poppin off all up in Klub Krucial. We saw Memory Tapes and Washed out. ALl our friends met up there and we were partying hard. Memory Tapes' song Bicycle went especially hard.

Washed Out closed out the showcase (I saw him again the next day at the fader fort) he was backed by indie band Small Black. Chill Wave party braaaaa!!!!1

there can be nothing better than enjoying live music with friends you love in your beloved hometown. my friends are the dumbest and I mean that ina good way. shout outs to will, anna, nathan, laurel, justin, daddy brems, beck, ali, herb, cody, jamie, jackie, catherine, twomps, mickey, julian, frannie, pat, stew and anyone else who partied with me at sxsw. thanks for the good times.

SXSW recap thursday

Thursday was another day to enjoy music. I'm finding it harder to recall exactly what we did. But i do remember us discovering the French Legation Museum's lawn party. The museum has beautiful space and the lawn party provided two stages with pretty cool line-ups everyday. We caught Real Estate(whom I saw twice at SXSW). They have some good songs. They're nothing to write home about but they're a solid band. Beach Comber is a choice track.

One thing people should learn about sxsw is that if there is a band that is extremely hyped before the festival you should steer clear of any shows they are playing for fear of a human clusterfuck. This is twicely important to do if the band sucks. This year that band was brittish trio The xx. I'm sorry i dont like them. I find their live show boring and I dont buy the whole "minimalist sound" thing. yawn. The fat that people were wait in line all day to see this band is pathetic. dont waste your time.

Since I'm on the topic of the French Legation lawn party. I'm just gonna do a run through of the shows we saw there. Sharon von Etten played some quiet songs on electric guitar. Julianna Barwick bored us with her looped vocals but it was OK because the weather was beautiful and we were in the company of good friends laying in the grass. Holly Miranda played some forgettable songs as well. But the highlight of the lawn party besides the friends and the beer and the sun was one of my new favorite bands Woods. This trio is just a great band. Their lead singer is quite high-pitched (think Shins) and they write well-crafted songs while also retaining the ability to jam over a heavy bass line. Great band. I saw them twice at SXSW as well.

Night time time. Their were tons of big showcases to go to but we decided to go to a low key one at Wave. Our decision payed off big time. It was the carpark showcase and we saw Kria Brekkan, Toro y Moi (again), Lesser Gonzales Alvarez (baltimore represeent), and a pretty good band from california called the Growlers (be prepared for an awesome story here in a little bit). Avey Tare from Animal Collective was also "spinning records" in between sets. I couldnt muster up the courage to go talk to him. Kria Brekkan is his wife and she wins the award for most disturbing musical performance. I would almost consider her a performance artist. She sings in a high pitched child-like voice and uses loop pedals and keyboards. She is very thin to the point of unhealthiness. As bizzarre and creepy as her show was I really enjoyed it.

a favorite of mine that i was wishing they would play. Avey did not oblige.

In between sets I went to the bathroom. A guy in there was like "my friend just texted me and he says Bill murray is upstairs but I dont wanna walk up there if he isnt here." I went over to my friends and we decided to go upstairs and check it out. The growlers were playing on the roof and what do you know a old/high looking Bill Murray is standing front and center. Excitement ensues and we worked our way in to the crowd right behind Billy boy. Of course a semi-aggressive mosh pit break out. So yeah I moshed with Bill Murray that night. No big deal.
The growlers werent bad either.

And day two of sxsw was finished. two nights down two to go. great job life.

SXSW recap wednesday

Another year and another South by Southwest experience. I believe this was my 8th in a row. I had a great time and got to spend some quality moments with great friends. But in the end its about the music and I saw plenty of it. The first day started out at The Austinist party at the Mohawk. Anni Rossi delivered an OK set and then Toro Y Moi really impressed me with his looped reverb drenched vocals and 80's/beachy synths. The song Blessa is always a jam. This guy is headed for bigger things.

We then proceeded outside and caught sets by The Besnard Lakes and White Denim. I'm not really big on the Lakes they bore me and I really dont see what the big deal is. But fellow texans White Denim blew my face off like they always do. I love this band. If you ever have the chanced to see them gather up some friends, drink some beers and get ready to pee your pants in excitement. This three-piece plays blistering rock shows almost without a second of pause. The songs melt into one another perfectly and alll three guys are great musicians. You can hear, blues, punk and funk influences but they have a go for broke style that is all their own. Lead singer and guitarist James Petralli's voice is complex and powerful. He also has a great scream. I cant say enough about these guys. They're just a great cohesive band holding it down for Texas.

The night came and we started out at Stubb's to catch The Walkmen. I have been a fan of this band for a while and they are seasoned and extremely professional. It will only be a matter of time before lead singer Hamilton Leithauser loses his voice forever. He sings unbelievably loud and hard every show. They were accompanied by an 8 piece brass section which really enhanced the performance. Especially on songs like the beautiful Red Moon.

After this show we were gettin our buzz on and ready to party. Wednesday night happened to be a great night for hip-hop so we headed to Speakeasy to catch the Stones Throw Records showcase. We saw sets by J Rocc (who was a pleasant surprise spinning awesome soul and funk jams), Stones Throw founder Peanut Butter Wolf, and my favorite producer of all time Madlib. This show was packed and extremely fun. the set up was kind of wonky though with the stage/DJ booth right next to the bar. A great time was had by all.

The goal was to end the night at The Phoenix to see Flying Lotus. Mission accomplished. Flying lotus blew us all away with haunting futuristic beats and glitchy tripped out visual projections. It was a great show. He has great stage presence and converses with the audience well. I cant wait to see him again at Le Poisson Rouge on tuesday. about halfway through the show Flying Lotus cut off the beat and said "Yeah so all y'all can tweet Flying Lotus is killin shit right now." Thats about right. Highlights of the set were tracks like "Camel" and "melt" as well as remixes of Lil Wayne's "A Milli" and "I feel like dying." Fly Lo was also kind enough to give us a sneak listen to some new material. All in all. It was a great night.

new music: Jay Electronica

If you are a hip-hop fan you must be aware of the sad state that the genre is in. bitches, hos, money, cars and semi-clever lines correlating cartoons and pop culture references to sex or "gettin money" or whatever. Well there is still hope. Jay Electronica is an intelligent and gifted MC from New Orleans. I hope he is here to save the world. for now enjoy this song.

In the studio and assemblage

I had been neglecting my studio as of late so I decided to start a massive assemblage project comprised of old contact sheets, prints and test strips that I let sit in a tub in my darkroom that I intermittently pour chemistry over. I then let them dry together and rip them apart. Some amazing accidents occur. They will now be assembled and pasted together with paint and film. We'll see what happens. the following 8 images are long exposures what will be composited onto each other. I am simply moving the clippings around with my hands while the shutter is open as well as flashing with my cell phone. It is a photoshop process about technical difficulties. Although I am creating a series of images no progress is made on this physical project. if anything it is detrimental to my progress in the studio.

PS 1 is one of my favorite spaces in New York for the exhibition of art and at this time they have an amazing exhibit on the history of performance art. It totally melted my face off. It is truly amazing. GO SEE IT!!!!! It is comprised of over 100 monitors screening important performances from the past 100 years. You could spend the whole day there. Their outdoor space is amazing as well. I wonder what will be here next.

Wow what a hectic couple of weeks. Last week we had a snowstorm and some of my classes were cancelled. I have been real busy in the darkroom and have yet to scan any of the new images. On a gray day in Austin over Christmas break my father and I took a walk through McKinney Falls State Park. I became interested in texture and found myself playing with depth of field and focus while frequently zooming in as close as possible. The reflections on the water are fun to photograph. you can choose to focus on the reflection on the surface or the creek bottom. The space of the area is hardly referenced.

This will be the last post of the day but I have really wanted to get this work up for a number of reasons. These are photographs that mean a lot to me and I am extremely proud of them. They solidified my belief in myself as an artist. They are indicative of my style and the mood and aesthetics I try to achieve. They also constituted part of my portfolio for application to graduate school. All of these photos except for one were shot in Baltimore. Right now I am at an junction in my work where I am trying new things (shooting during the day on the street and portraiture) in order to learn and expand my understanding of what interests me. I will always be fascinated by the night and artificial light. I would like to think of this series as a study on ideas of isolation and solitude by myself as an attempt to cause the viewer to feel those emotions. In doing so hopefully the viewer learns something about their self and realizes that these are necessary feelings to experience in a world where we may feel like being alone is a bad thing.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. I have pages upon pages of black and white negatives from this trip. Unfortunately I haven't had time to get to them due to my workload at school. So much more coming soon.

Earlier this summer my family and I went on vacation to west Texas and New Mexico. The trip was great and extremely relaxing. It also provided me the opportunity to take pictures in a place with barren landscapes, extreme sun and huge sky. Architecture was meager to say the least. I am currently taking my first digital photography class and I would like to make it clear that none of these photos have been retouched. Some of them could use it though and I am aware. It just breaks my heart to use that darned photoshop but I am coming around. It is a tool of the trade. This series of photos was shot in and outside of Balmorhea and Marfa, Texas. The mountains(large hills) you see are the Davis mountains. Next will be New Mexico. I have been working a lot in the darkroom and producing new work. I will soon make this new work available to you online. For now you will have to deal with the colorful jubilation. Soon will come the dark and poetic.

I am finding myself overwhelmed. This week has been an amazing trial. Not only am I trying to manage adjusting to life in Brooklyn but classes started this week on my birthday August 31st. It has been a lot of work. I have managed to attend classes, move in to my studio and darkroom, acquire an assistantship, explore the city and spend time with old friends. I could not ask for more stimulation. As the past two weeks have passed I do feel myself slipping in to a routine and that is comforting. This is the beginning of a new life for me. So I want to tentatively make plans for this site. The plan is for me to upload more of my old digital images since it is fast and easy and just get them out of the way. As the next couple of weeks go by I will be producing new work as well as archiving old images. my intent is to get through all the old work that y'all may not have seen. Once this is through the blog will become more streamlined. What I mean by this is that it will be up to date with my work. The new posts will reflect my new work and interests. Along with showing new work at a later date I will also make time to show you bits and pieces of my life and living situation in New York as well as posts concerning music, art and culture that influences my view. Unfortunately this blog falls pretty low on my list of priorities at the moment. For this reason I have semi-declined self promoting this blog since I cannot devote the time that it deserves. For now here are some tasty random images for your eyes to feast on. I would also like to emphasize that I do not necessarily consider any of this my best work. It is not a cohesive or refined body of work and for that I apologize. But it is about the image and the image alone. So to all those negative nancies out there... go fuck yourself.

Digital and Indonesia

I believe I truly committed to being an artist on the most inspiring trip of my life when I traveled with two friends to Banda Aceh, Indonesia in the winter of 2007. Coincidentally this was my first real experience with a digital SLR camera. I enjoy black and white darkroom photography more than anything but when traveling swiftly in dirty and humid countries the advantages of digital are obvious due to the amount of spontaneity they allow. At this time I am detached from all of my negatives and prints but I will be reunited with them soon. The beginning installments of photos on this site will all be digital. I find this hard to believe considering my past disdain for the digital image. But it is fitting. In a way some of this work marks the end of the beginning for me as an artist. It seems only fair that I start from here.

Hello all. My name is Eric Douglas Breeding and I am currently a first year MFA student at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York studying photography. I was born and raised in Austin, Texas and received my undergraduate degree from Goucher College in Baltimore, Maryland. I am 23 years old. My intent with this blog is to create a forum not only to display my work and the different processes entailed in producing it, but to allow myself to have a space in which i can show some of my inspiration, interests and viewpoints while hopefully receiving feedback. I would describe myself as a conceptual night photographer. But as a photographer it is my job to look at everything with a unique view and shoot everything that interests me. You will not only see black and white night photographs here. Nor will this be a professional blog. I will design this blog with the intent of it being fun and interesting. my website which is currently in the works will be a portal to the professional side of my art. I will include much more information at a later date. For now here is a picture I took in Balmorhea, Texas.
